 L’équipe cycliste Garneau-Crocs Ogilvy-Renault, édition 2008
May 29, 2008
Constantly seeking excellence, Garneau-Crocs will maintain for 2008, its international standard by introducing once again, five talented Québec riders, who will be lending assistance to the four foreign riders from Australia and Brazil. “Our objective is not only to improve the calibre of the races, but also to make our local young people even more competitive”, declared Mr. Garneau.

Australian riders, Tim Hucker and Peter Ladd are with their second year with the team and will be supported by Kleber Ramos Da Silva and Patrique Gama Azevedos, both members of the Brazil National Team. Da Silva definitively made his presence known during his stay with the team in 2007, he alone gaining 8 victories during the season. Quebecers, Michael Joanisse and Jean-François Racine are also returning this year, with the cooperation of Vincent Quirion and Antoine Matteau both with the junior team last year and Dominic Hamel. The team’s goal is to win the “Mardis de Lachine” series, as well as being on the podium at the Grand Prix de Beauce.
Since its inception in 2006, the Garneau-Optik team has shown that it was a forceful team requiring cautiousness from other riders. Last year, Garneau-Crocs imposed its presence by gaining more than 40 podiums in Quebec and in the North-Eastern United States. This year’s team will be feared with its powerful international riders as well as the talent of its Québécois riders. Furthermore, the team started its 2008 season with 8 races, of which a complete “pink” podium for the ZM Islander Criterium in Toronto. With the arrival of the two Brazilian riders yesterday, the entire team will challenge with force the Grand Prix de Charlevoix this weekend, in preparation for the upcoming Tour de Beauce international race, held in 6 stages, from June 10-15.

In addition to the riders of the Senior 1-2 category, the Garneau-Crocs team will include a junior team of 8 boys as well as six cadet and two minime riders, covering a greater number of categories, allowing a better development and asserting itself on the circuit. By doing so, this maintains the team’s mission, which consists of preparing promising talent towards a professional cycling career, permitting the riders to illustrate themselves on the Québec and North-American circuits, and to pursue their objectives in this sport. The members of the Garneau-Crocs team will thus begin an entire series of races, in Quebec with the Tour de Beauce and the Classique Montréal-Québec, as well as in Ontario and in the North-Eastern United States.

In order to achieve these ambitious objectives, a rigorous structure was put in place with regards to the athletes, Louis Garneau Sports and its partners’ image. It goes without saying that the realisation of such a project requires the essential support of several sponsors. The persons in charge of the team are particularly proud to be associated again this year with a great sponsor, Crocs Canada as official partner. The following sponsors also made a point of being part of this project, aimed at supporting our future Canadian cyclists: Ogilvy Renault, BMW City of Quebec, Cascades, Forzani Sport-Experts Group, Shimano Pro, Aquafina, Bank of Montreal, Couture-Rochette, Samson Bélair, CIBC Wood Gundy, Primotex, Selles San Marco and Vittoria.
